This weekend Nate and I made our first organic purchase at
Urban Acres!! As he mentioned in his post, we have a few goals for the year. One of these being to have a healthier lifestyle (i.e. food, medicines, cleaning products, etc). I know it doesn't look like much, but we have to start somewhere!

Here are my thoughts:
1) Confession - I thought people that lived "organically, naturally" took things a little too far. No offense, I was judging before I understood the reasons behind the lifestyle. Not the most polite, or Godly, thing to do. I'm sorry for that.
2) I think that organic foods are super expensive and not very budget friendly. Well, really I haven't calculated it to be 100% sure that we would be spending more than our budget. Mr. Excel Wizard that is my husband, could you calculate that for us? :)
3) Eating organic and natural is definitely not convenient.
4) I have no idea what half of the stuff is. I mean what is kefir? Even after looking it up - I still have no idea.
5) It is a total lifestyle change and you really have to be committed.
The inspiration for our hopeful, but slow change:
It all started when my friend, Mica, was going through her pregnancy with Harlen Violet. For the health of Harlen, she really tried to change her diet to organic and the products she used to natural. Nate and I thought this was such a testament to love and parenting. We talked about trying to do the same thing when we decide to have children. Then Nate asked, "Why don't we try it before?" Little did we know that this one question planted a seed in my heart for change.
I have to give a lot of credit to my brother, Ronnie, and his wife, Mandy, and her friend, Christina for the ultimate decision to begin the change of our unhealthy habits. Christina is a Dietician in the business of changing the way we eat. You can visit her awesome blog to find out more -
Eating the Good Life.
My brother and fam started drinking raw milk, eating farm-raised eggs, and trying to add a few healthier choices into their food consumption. This really got my attention! During one of their trips to visit us in Dallas, Mandy and I chatted about it all. I was in
awe. I mean really, I couldn't get my chin off the floor. I was definitely intrigued. I was finding out from all around me that healthy vs. un-healthy food choices make such a huge impact on our health and well-being!!
With stomach issues, severe sinus infections (thank you to my Kinder students for that one), a husband that gets excited about eating healthier and just a desire to make my body a temple for Christ, I decided it was time for a change. Nate and I sat down to make our goals for the year and discussed this one. Although it didn't make our list in the form of "eat organic foods," we decided to slowly start making changes. A brave step for the Mr. as he is a little nervous about raw milk and vegetables that we have to look up on the internet.
What does it look like for us right now?
Well, as you see above, we bought a few things this past weekend. We are considering a produce co-op through Urban Acres and I plan to buy raw milk at Lucky Layla Farms next time we run out. Baby steps.
